Dig Out Those Hydrants

By Deputy Fire Chief Chad Small
February 4, 2010

A massive snowstorm is threatening to hit the Mid-Atlantic region. Winter storm warnings are posted across our entire area from 4pm Friday through 7pm Saturday.

Fire hydrants are essential for providing needed water to fire apparatus to be used by firefighters when a fire occurs. Fire hydrants often become buried in snow from regular snowfall, when plows clear the streets, and when residents dig out sidewalks and driveways.

If you have a fire hydrant located adjacent to your property, the members of Ogden Fire Co. ask that you consider digging it out should it become buried, as well as clearing a three-foot area around it to allow our firefighters easy access, should it be needed.

The Fire Companies that make up the Upper Chichester Fire Department do have street maps of the township with all the hydrant locations shown on them. But, by having residents uncover the hydrants it will help Firefighters locate them a little quicker and it will save a lot of time that would be lost having to do the shoveling ourselves.
