Not long after the Company returned from a CO detector activation, Engine 3 (@ 14:21) was dispatched to assist the Lower Chichester Fire Co. on a working alarm. Chief 39 (D. Durbano) arrived to confirm reports of smoke from the residence in the 1500 blk. of Summit Ave. Rescue 39 arrived, placed a 1.75 inch hose line in-service to extinguish the fire located in the first floor kitchen.
Engine 3 arrived to find other apparatus staged at the intersection of Laughead Ave. & Summit Av, and opted to go around the block for a better position. The engine ended up standing by at a hydrant at the intersection of Summit & Fronefield (within 300ft. of the first-in apparatus), leaving room for a truck co. to take up the position to the rear of Rescue 39. The Engine crew proceeded to the fire building and was assigned to check exposure "B". A smoke condition was found on all three floors of the exposure residence. With the assistance of Engine 13-5's members (Claymont Fire Co.) both crews checked for any extension of the fire and ventilated both exposures "B' & "B1".
While the Engine's crew was working the fire scene, the Operator of Engine 3, dressed the hydrant for possible usage and then conferred with Command to see if a possible second water supply would be needed. After that the Driver assisted fire ground operations by throwing three ground ladders to the rear of the original fire building with members of Truck 63.
Summit Ave. Command placed the fire under control within thirty minutes, with Engine 3 staying for about forty-five minutes total to help place other apparatus back in-service.
