SCBA Familiarization Test & Agility Course

By Deputy Fire Chief Chad Small
January 21, 2010

For the past two Thursday nights, members & officers of the Company completed a SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) familiarization/usage test and SCBA agility course. The members and officers of the Chester Heights Fire Co. (Sta. 71) were kind enough to invite Ogden for a second time in as many years to participate in this great training opportunity.

Each member was quizzed on the components, safety devices, and maintenance of the Scott NXG 7 SCBA. The next step required properly donning the air pack and breathing from the SCBA within one minute. The last step was completing an eight station mini-obstacle course in full turnout gear while utilizing the air pack. The course intention is to simulate fire ground task to give each member a perspective of their available air supply usage verse time working. Ogden uses a bottle with an air capacity of 45 cubic feet for an approximate 30 minute air supply. But, the actual time it takes for each member to use that available air, is dependant solely on that individual. Some members can use more or less air completing the same task.

The course was as follows:

-Dragging a charged 1.75 inch hose line approximately 50 feet
-Placing a 14 foot roof ladder
-Utilizing a roof saw to complete one simulated roof cut
-Using a weighted (10 lbs) long pike pole to simulate pulling a ceiling 15 times
-Simulating walking 3 floors using a Stairmaster machine
-Climbing a 24 foot extension ladder and then hoisting a 10 lbs weight
-Crawling through low clearance space with entanglement hazards (heavy wire) requiring the removal of your air pack to make the clear the obstacle.
-Dragging a weighted dummy approximately 20 feet and back

Both nights served as a great refresher while getting in some exercise at the same time. All members successfully completed all phases to the testing and agility course. The second night we were also joined by members from the Lower Chichester and Tinicum Fire Companies. Thank you to the Chester Heights Fire Co. (71) for inviting us to participate. And Thanks to Chief 71 (L. Ward) for creating our testing material.
